Ingredients
- 2 beef round steaks
- 1 packet dry onion soup mix
- 6 mushrooms
- 1 onion
- 1 cup of dissolved beef stock cube
METHOD
FOR THE OVEN:
- Preheat the oven to 325°F / 163°C. Sprinkle half of the dry onion soup mix in the bottom of a casserole dish. Place round steak on top; sprinkle with remaining dry soup mix. Add sliced mushrooms and onions on top. Pour in beef stock all over.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 60-90 minutes (or until steak and vegetables are tender). Thicker cuts of beef will require longer cooking time, so adjust accordingly.
- Remove from the oven and thinly slice the steak against the grain and spoon mushrooms and onions over top.
FOR THE SLOW COOKER:
- Sprinkle half of the dry onion soup mix in the bottom of a slow cooker. Place steak on top and sprinkle with remaining dry soup mix. Add sliced mushrooms and onions on top. Pour beef stock over all.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until steak is fall-apart tender.
- Remove from the slow cooker and thinly slice the steak against the grain and spoon mushrooms and onions over top.
Side Serving Options
There are so many different ways to enjoy this dinner such as:
- Build Steak and Cheese Subs by using the sliced round steak on a roll, topped with the mushrooms and onions, and then finished with cheddar cheese. Pop the whole sub under the grill to melt the cheese, then serve!
- Or make a common comfort dish by pairing the sliced round steak, mushrooms and onions with mashed potatoes, noodles, rice, roasted broccoli, roasted asparagus, or a simple side salad.
